David’s Warriors: Source Tables and Calculation Notes

These tables support David’s Warriors: The Census, the Calendar, and the Key of 23. They preserve the sequence in 1 Chronicles 12:23–37, distinguish people from printed-number sums, and show how the selected 220800 western total is transformed. The calculations follow File 57, §§4–7 and Appendices B/D.

The table entries are analytical summaries, not continuous Scripture quotations. Their digits omit thousands separators for calculation. English verse numbering is used; some Hebrew editions number this part of the chapter one verse later.

1. The complete list in biblical order

Read 1 Chronicles 12:23–37 in BSB. The passage describes the gathering at Hebron to make David king. It is separate from the later census ordered by David in 1 Chronicles 21:1–5.

The two Naphtali numbers remain separate because the text distinguishes commanders and their accompanying men. The 120000 beyond the Jordan remains one entry; the passage does not divide it into separate numbers for Reuben, Gad, and eastern Manasseh. No numerical guess is added for Issachar’s kinsmen or for separately named leaders.

“Western Manasseh” identifies the half-tribe contrasted with the eastern half in verse 37. The BSB note to verse 33 identifies “to David” as wording supplied from the LXX and absent from the Hebrew; that wording variation does not change the 50000. The table summarizes the number and group without quoting that clause.

2. Why the list produces different totals

The key inclusion question is visible in BSB:

From Levi: 4,600, including Jehoiada, leader of the house of Aaron, with 3,700 men, and Zadok, a mighty young man of valor, with 22 commanders from his own family.

— 1 Chronicles 12:26–28, Berean Standard Bible (BSB)

BSB’s wording treats the following groups as included under Levi. The canonical study retains both an inclusive reading of Jehoiada’s body and an additional printed-number reading of the Hebrew sequence. Adding displayed figures is a distinct analytical operation: it can count a subgroup’s number again without asserting that the persons were additional.

Zadok’s 22 commanders introduce a second decision. One can add their printed number, or reserve it for the proposed 22 + Zadok = 23 key. The latter is the chosen symbolic convention, not a textual instruction to omit commanders from a headcount.

Western ledgerJehoiada’s 3700Zadok’s 22Total

The differences are exact: 220800 − 217100 = 3700 and 220822 − 220800 = 22. None of these totals supplies a complete number for the uncounted Issacharite kinsmen. The minimum-plus-chiefs total reflects a further declared convention, not a claim that BSB requires those commanders to be outside the 4600.

The source order is unchanged in both tables. Repeating the preceding total at Jehoiada or Zadok means that the row is not added in that particular column; it does not mean the row is missing from Scripture.

3. The priestly entries and the Key of 23

The following comparisons account for the opening figures and explain how the small leadership counts enter the proposed structure. They are calculations drawn from the listed numbers, rather than new troop figures attributed to the text.

RelationshipCalculationWhat it establishes
Opening three tribes6800 + 7100 + 4600 = 18500 = 5 × 3700Jehoiada’s figure divides the earlier subtotal exactly.
Jehoiada added18500 + 3700 = 22200 = 6 × 3700The additional-number convention changes that multiplier from 5 to 6.
All printed figures through Zadok22200 + 22 = 22222The visible 22 belongs in the all-printed ledger.
Zadok counted with his commanders22 + 1 = 23The proposed key requires an explicit interpretive counting step.
Zadok’s completed group and Issachar23 × 200 = 4600The two leadership counts reproduce Levi’s stated figure.
Simple ratio illustration4600 × 25/23 = 5000A transformed value; 5000 is not a replacement biblical reading.
Through Benjamin, Jehoiada included in Levi6800 + 7100 + 4600 + 3000 = 21500 = 50 × 430An inclusive comparison subtotal, with the 22 withheld.
Through Benjamin, Jehoiada added separately21500 + 3700 = 25200 = 70 × 360The additional-number comparison at the same endpoint.
Through Ephraim, selected symbolic ledger6800 + 7100 + 4600 + 3700 + 3000 + 20800 = 46000The source-order subtotal keeps the 22 outside the calculation.
Earlier subtotal and later Zebulun entry46000 × 25/23 = 50000The same ratio reaches the number printed for Zebulun.

Source: File 57 §§5.1–5.7. The ratio 25/23 is the study’s predeclared Key-of-23 operation. The occurrence of a completed 23 supplies the proposed local connection; Scripture does not explicitly prescribe the multiplication.

4. Issachar’s calendar comparison and 200-unit measure

The immediate left-hand pair is 18000 + 200 = 18200. Reading those personnel numbers as calendar quantities gives:

50 × 360 + 50 × 4 = 50 × 364.

The 364-day calendar also satisfies 364 = 52 × 7 = 4 × 91, so 18200 = 200 × 91. These equations compare two stated numbers with calendar units. They do not establish a 50-year period of military service or prove the occupation of Issachar’s chiefs.

The same 200 measures all the subsequent western entries:

Naphtali commanders10005256
Naphtali troops37000185441
Dan28600143584
Asher40000200784

Three larger contiguous blocks follow directly:

Block in source orderSumExact forms
Issachar through Naphtali’s troops200 + 50000 + 1000 + 37000 = 88200200 × 21² = 180 × 490
Dan and Asher28600 + 40000 = 68600200 × 7³ = 140 × 490
Issachar through Asher88200 + 68600 = 156800200 × 28² = 320 × 490

Thus 21² + 7³ = 28², or 441 + 343 = 784, describes the relation between those two adjacent blocks. This is a property of the declared sums, not a replacement for the tribal identities. Source: File 57 §§6.2 and 6.6–6.10.

The 360-day Prophetic and 364-day Enochian units remain distinct. The 336-day Priestly Ledger, discussed in Levi and the Priestly Year, is another model. The adjective “priestly” in the Key-of-23 discussion does not turn every count into days of a 336-day calendar. File 12 controls these distinctions. No solar-year approximation or leap-week scheme is required for the exact local identities here.

5. Western and national totals

The selected western base is 220800 = 460 × 480 = 23 × 20 × 480. Applying 25/23 to that base gives 240000 = 500 × 480. The eastern 120000 is kept unchanged.

70/69 transformed224000120000344000Western base × 70/69

Only the last two rows transform the western base. The 25/23 branch gives the national relation 240000 + 120000 = 360000, with west and east contributing 2/3 and 1/3 of that transformed whole. The same whole is 360 × 1000; reading that product theologically as a “divine year” is a further symbolic interpretation, not a statement that the passage counts years.

The companion branch is 220800 × 70/69 = 224000, because 220800 = 69 × 3200. Adding the unchanged east gives 344000 = 430 × 800. The introduction emphasizes 25/23 because it connects with Zadok’s completed 23, the 460→500 comparison, and the national thirds. Keeping the companion result visible prevents the selected branch from being confused with the only possible model operation.

Source: File 57 §§7.1–7.7 and Appendix B. File 55 provides the broader thirds comparison, but this local arithmetic does not import its chronological origins or directions.

6. Why the factors 460 and 480 matter

The chronological comparison uses the ordinary 490d anchors 1446 BC for the Exodus, 1406 BC for the Conquest, and 966 BC for the Temple foundation. These are reconstructed dates supplied by the chronological framework. The biblical passages state relative years and construction durations.

First Kings 6:1 locates the start of Temple building in the 480th year after the Exodus. First Kings 6:38 describes seven years of Temple building; 7:1 gives thirteen for Solomon’s palace; 9:10 joins the two houses in a twenty-year statement.

The calculation below uses File 18’s cardinal elapsed-480 state, 966 BC. Its adjacent ordinal state, 967 BC, places the foundation in the 480th year after 479 completed years; the two states remain distinct.

ComparisonCalculation in the selected frameworkStatus
Exodus to Temple foundation1446 − 966 = 480 yearsOrdinary chronological comparison.
Temple and palace envelope7 + 13 = 20 yearsWhole-year construction model based on the stated durations.
Construction-envelope endpoint966 − 20 = 946 BCLocal schematic endpoint, not an independently stated BC date.
Conquest to that endpoint1406 − 946 = 460 yearsConquest-origin comparison.
Exodus to that endpoint1446 − 946 = 500 yearsExodus-origin comparison.
Key-of-23 relation460 × 25/23 = 500Exact ratio linking those two spans.

The Temple factor 480 remains fixed in 460 × 480 → 500 × 480. This is the chronological meaning assigned to the western transformation. First Kings 6:37–38 places the foundation in Ziv, the second month, in Solomon’s fourth year and completion in Bul, the eighth month, in his eleventh year. The 946 BC endpoint used here belongs to the declared whole-year 7 + 13 construction model; it is not a month-exact completion date or a date for Solomon’s marriage or moral decline.

7. Evidence and interpretation

LevelExamples in this study
Textual dataThe named groups, their order, 22 commanders, 200 chiefs, and the other stated numbers.
Arithmetic under declared conventionsThe four western totals, 18200 = 50 × 364, and 220800 × 25/23 = 240000.
Structural interpretationZadok’s completed 23 signals a key; Issachar’s entry helps organize a calendar-related numerical pattern.
Historical hypothesisA trained circle of scribes arranged or transmitted the list with these relationships in view. The passage does not identify such a circle.
Theological readingOrdered tribes and priestly leadership express national unity around the divinely appointed king and anticipate sacred service.

The analysis retains every numbered entry in its source position and shows which figures each sum adds. It makes no numerical probability claim and does not treat one attractive subtotal as proof of the entire proposal. The wider comparisons with other Chronicles lists, sacrificial lists, and ancient king-list traditions require their own stated counting rules and belong to the detailed treatment.
