Supporting Tables: The Book of Jubilees Chronology

Reference appendix to The Book of Jubilees: How Its Chronology Works. These tables distinguish date expressions in Jubilees, calculations from those expressions, reconstructed ages, and the BC framework adopted in the 490d research.

All BC conversions below use AM 1 = 3856 BC, hence BC = 3857 − AM. The BC numbers are modern coordinates under that declared anchor. They are not numbers printed in the ancient text.

1. Selected dates and their source status

The table is selective. It supplies the introductory article’s chronology without republishing every lifespan and variant in the older detailed article.

Printed-edition references: Jubilees 3, 4, 5, and 11, R. H. Charles, 1913. The chapter links lead to the CCEL transcription; some of its verse divisions differ from the printed edition. See the edition notes.

The Flood numeral: Charles’s apparatus to 5:22 identifies the correction from twenty-second to twenty-seventh, and his printed text uses the corrected numeral. The latter gives 26 × 49 + 4 × 7 + 6 = 1308. CCEL displays the corrected numeral without preserving that apparatus. The 1308 row follows this identified emendation and the chronology adopted in File 20; it is not an unaltered manuscript numeral.

The Fall and the departure: Jubilees 3 places the transgression in the eighth year and subsequently narrates the departure from Eden. The table uses the year-level Fall position. It does not identify every day and month of those events with one another.

Canonical controls: File 20 and File 53. The ordinary MT, SP, and LXX constructions remain separately defined in File 18.

2. The reconstructed patriarchal sequence

File 53 §13A begins with the Jubilees Abraham anchor, then applies the Genesis-compatible age sequence of 100, 60, and 130 years. Its result is:

Stage Calculation from the preceding stage AM year BC date
Abraham born Date anchor 1876 1981
Isaac born 1876 + 100 1976 1881
Jacob born 1976 + 60 2036 1821
Jacob enters Egypt 2036 + 130 2166 1691

The ages are explicit in Genesis 21:5 BSB, 25:26 BSB, and 47:9 BSB. Jubilees also retains the 100-year language for Abraham in 15:17 and the 130-year entry age for Jacob in 45:6. The 60-year link is stated here on the authority of Genesis 25:26; it should not be presented as a newly verified quotation from Jubilees.

These ages yield the controlled comparison 1981 → 1881 → 1821 → 1691 BC = 100 + 60 + 130. File 53 explicitly distinguishes this reconstruction from the transmitted jubilee/week schedule.

The dated schedule beside the reconstruction

Event Dating formula used in File 20’s comparison Calculated AM / BC Reconstructed AM / BC
Isaac’s birth block Jubilee 41, week 4, year 6 AM 1987 / 1870 BC AM 1976 / 1881 BC
Jacob’s birth Jubilee 42, week 6, year 2 AM 2046 / 1811 BC AM 2036 / 1821 BC

For Isaac, 40 × 49 + 3 × 7 + 6 = 1987. File 20 §§7A2.3 and 8A.2 calculate the received fourth-week date block in this way. The year is computed from the dating expressions and their context; the birth sentence itself does not print the numeral 1987. Charles marks the fourth-week reading as problematic and proposes a third-week emendation. His editorial AM annotations consequently need to be distinguished from the unamended formula used in File 20. The edition note below explains this point.

Jacob supplies the more direct example used in the introductory article. The formula in Jubilees 19:13 gives:

41 × 49 + 5 × 7 + 2 = 2046.

3857 − 2046 = 1811 BC.

The reconstructed AM 2036 instead converts to 1821 BC. The difference is 10 years. The table preserves both results and identifies their different bases.

These comparisons do not prove why the dates diverge. File 20 discusses possible authorial or editorial pressure, and File 53 directs attention to the numerical and theological structures served by the dating schedule. Those are interpretations of the evidence, distinct from the arithmetic. The detailed study examines later events, including the precise Egypt-entry and death-date passages, alongside the full source discussion and broader numerical patterns.

3. Numbered years and completed years

A date within a jubilee

Let J be the jubilee number, W the week number within it, and Y the year number within that week. Then:

AM year = 49 × (J − 1) + 7 × (W − 1) + Y.

The subtraction of one applies to completed blocks. In the 39th jubilee, 38 jubilees have been completed. In its second week, one week has been completed. Adding the seventh year gives Abram’s numbered year:

38 × 49 + 1 × 7 + 7 = 1876.

Expression Correct meaning
In the 39th jubilee Within the jubilee numbered 39
After 39 complete jubilees After 39 × 49 = 1911 years
At the beginning of AM 1876 1875 years have elapsed from the beginning of AM 1
AM 1876 under the selected BC anchor 3856 − 1875 = 1981 BC

Thus Abraham’s location in the 39th jubilee does not make the Creation-to-Abraham interval 39 whole jubilees.

The closing tally in Jubilees 50:4

The closing statement gives 49 jubilees + 1 week + 2 years, followed by 40 years to entry into the land. That yields 2410 and 2450. Charles’s edition annotates those totals as AM 2410 and AM 2450.

The repository’s fixed BC framework uses the same numbers as elapsed spans from its Creation anchor, with the following ordinal labels:

Framework position Elapsed years from 3856 BC Numbered AM year BC label
Creation epoch 0 1 3856
Exodus 2410 2411 1446
Conquest 2450 2451 1406
Land-rest threshold 2457 2458 1399

This explicitly separates the ancient closing reckoning, the editor’s AM annotations, and the repository’s anchored year labels. The AM 2411 and AM 2451 entries are conversions within the declared framework, not quotations of the marginal annotations in Charles. Conversely, substituting AM 2450 into BC = 3857 − AM gives 1407 BC, so it cannot silently stand for the framework’s 1406 BC Conquest anchor.

The paired 2450-year spans

Frame Beginning End Span
Creation to Conquest 3856 BC / AM 1 1406 BC / AM 2451 2450 years
Fall to land-rest 3849 BC / AM 8 1399 BC / AM 2458 2450 years

Both endpoints in the second row lie seven years later than those in the first. Moving both ends equally preserves the span. File 53 §7 interprets the second row as a movement from Eden’s ruin to rest in the land. The two rows are related constructions, rather than independent chronological attestations.

4. A further structural comparison

The introductory argument does not require the larger numerical system, but File 20 §7A.10 supplies a useful next comparison. It divides the Creation-to-Conquest span as follows:

Segment Elapsed years
Creation 3856 BC → Jared 3396 BC 460
Jared 3396 BC → Exodus 1446 BC 1950
Exodus 1446 BC → Conquest 1406 BC 40
Total 460 + 1950 + 40 = 2450

The same section compares a selected Abraham-call position, 1906 BC, with the Exodus and Conquest: 1906 − 1446 = 460, and 1906 − 1406 = 500. Its Key-of-23 operation is 460 × 25/23 = 500. The gain of 40 matches the wilderness span under these anchors.

Here 1906 BC belongs to the repository’s selected call-at-75 reconstruction from the Abraham anchor. It must not be presented as though every adjacent event date in Jubilees’ received schedule had been harmonized. The arithmetic is exact within the stated framework; the bookend interpretation and any claim about ancient authorial intention remain further arguments.

The literal jubilee unit throughout is still 49 years. The additional comparison does not redefine it as 50 years or replace the paired Creation/Conquest and Fall/rest frames.

5. Editions, calendar units, and source notes

The primary English edition checked is R. H. Charles, “The Book of Jubilees,” in The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, volume II (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1913). Its printed text and apparatus were checked through the volume’s OCR alongside the CCEL transcription. Charles’s 1902 standalone study is a different publication.

Three distinctions matter when following the online links:

  • Verse divisions: the printed Abraham dating appears in 11:14–15; CCEL merges the material under 11:13. The printed Jacob birth formula is in 19:13; CCEL distributes the material across 19:12–13. The calculations remain 39/2/7 and 42/6/2, respectively.
  • Editorial corrections: the Flood’s 27th-jubilee reading is a correction identified in Charles’s apparatus and adopted in his printed text. It must be identified when AM 1308 is used.
  • Editorial AM annotations: Charles marks “fourth” as problematic in the Isaac passages and proposes “third.” His AM 1979 annotation at 15:1 reflects that editorial treatment; applying the same third-week emendation to the sixth-year formula gives AM 1980, whereas File 20’s received fourth-week comparison yields AM 1986/1987. A bracketed AM numeral is an editorial calculation, not automatically a numeral supplied by a manuscript.

Jubilees’ calendar language is separately explicit: 6:30–32 gives 52 weeks and 364 days. The year is 52 × 7 = 364 days, while a chronological jubilee is 7 × 7 = 49 years. File 12 controls the broader calendar definitions; the new calendar introduction explains them accessibly.
