Technical Appendix: The Kings of Judah

This appendix supplies the reign ledger and calendar conventions behind The Kings of Judah: Reign Totals and the Fifty-Year Difference. Its purpose is to make the comparison reproducible while keeping historical dates, formal reign totals, and schematic coordinates distinct.

A. The reigns from Rehoboam to Zedekiah

The following table preserves the biblical reign notices. Its primary schematic column follows the canonical A7 convention: Athaliah’s seventh-year narrative boundary. The A6 audit uses her six completed years. All other entries are identical. Athaliah’s 7 is therefore a boundary count, not a biblical statement that she completed seven years of rule.

The three-month reigns are shown as ¼ year for this formal ledger. Exact month lengths belong to a calendar calculation; this table does not assert that every historical quarter contained ninety elapsed days.

Total 394½ 393½ Kings witness

The whole-year entries apart from Athaliah total 387. Thus the two columns are 387 + 7 + ½ = 394½ and 387 + 6 + ½ = 393½. This is a formal reign-notice ledger with one narrative-boundary convention. Calling every value a printed completed reign length would obscure its most important qualification.

Solomon’s reign lasted forty years (1 Kings 11:42). The Temple foundation belongs to his fourth year (1 Kings 6:1). The canonical formal subtraction is 40 − 4 = 36. It supplies the Temple-era remainder used in the ledger, rather than claiming an exact elapsed duration from the construction day to Solomon’s death.

Temple-era calculation A7: primary schematic A6: completed-duration audit
Solomon’s formal remainder 36 36
Rehoboam through Zedekiah 394½ 393½
Gross Temple-era ledger 430½ 429½

Source alignment: File 18 §2.5.3 retains Athaliah’s six-year entry; File 19 §§10.4–10.6 preserves the seven-boundary ledger and 430½ total. File 65 §§2.1–2.4 and 2.13, reciprocally recognized by File 08, explicitly establishes A7 as the primary schematic reading and A6 as its audit. The columns make those roles visible together.

B. How the fifty years are calculated

Two levels of comparison need to remain separate.

At the annual-coordinate level, the historical foundation is 966 BC and the schematic pivot is 1016 BC:

1016 − 966 = 50.

At the calendar-phase level, File 65 uses 966n → 586t = 380½ years as the historical comparator. Here n marks the spring Nisan boundary and t the autumn Tishri boundary. Tishri is half a calendar year after Nisan in the declared phase model.

On smaller screens, scroll a wide table horizontally to see every column.

Ledger Gross formal total Historical phase comparator Surplus
A7, Kings 430½ 380½ 50 years
A6, Kings 429½ 380½ 49 years
A7, with Chronicles’ ten days 430½ + 10 days 380½ 50 years + 10 days
A6, with Chronicles’ ten days 429½ + 10 days 380½ 49 years + 10 days

The selected Tishri boundary is not the day of the Temple’s destruction. 2 Kings 25:8–9 places the burning in the fifth month. The phase comparison uses a declared seventh-month terminal; it does not move the biblical event. Similarly, 966n is the annual phase anchor, while 1 Kings 6:1 names the foundation’s second month. These annual boundaries permit the specified ledger comparison, not an exact day-to-day reconstruction of the building’s life.

The two three-month reigns account for the common half-year. Subtracting the phase-aligned comparator cancels it: 430½ − 380½ = 50. Subtracting only the unphased 380-year base would instead leave 50½. Both subtractions can be performed, but they answer different questions. The extra half-year must neither vanish without explanation nor be added again after phase alignment.

2 Chronicles 36:9 gives Jehoiachin three months and ten days, whereas Kings gives three months. On the canonical schematic 360-day calendar, the combined short-reign payload is 180 days in Kings or 190 days with Chronicles. The latter ten-day increment survives the subtraction. Those are declared schematic day counts, not a conversion of six unspecified historical lunar months into an exact number of days.

David’s additional half-year is not an input here. The ledger begins at Solomon’s Temple foundation. David’s 40½-year diagonal belongs to a separate comparison and cannot be used to repair a fraction in a Temple-era sum that excludes his reign.

C. Date and counting conventions

The normal historical labels in this article are 1446 BC for the Exodus, 966 BC for the Temple foundation, and 586 BC for Jerusalem’s fall. These are the canonical study’s selected chronology. Historical reconstruction and the formal ledger remain distinct throughout.

The phrase “the four hundred and eightieth year” in 1 Kings 6:1 is ordinal. The canonical files retain 967 BC as an adjacent boundary reading when that convention is explicitly opened, alongside the normal cardinal display 1446 − 480 = 966. The article uses the latter. It does not turn the verse into an assertion of 480 completed years to an exact construction day.

File 65 also makes the effect of adjacent endpoint choices explicit:

Declared phase comparison Historical span A7 surplus A6 surplus
966n → 586t 380½ 50 49
967n → 586t 381½ 49 48
966n → 587t 379½ 51 50
967n → 587t 380½ 50 49

The primary result is therefore conditional on a stated counting convention and endpoint pair. The adjacent results help readers see exactly what changes when a convention changes. They are not four independent confirmations of the same result. Sources: File 08’s Temple/Fall boundary controls and File 65 §§2.13–2.14.

The diagrams use same-side BC subtraction and annual labels. They do not cross BC/AD, so no year-zero correction is needed. They also do not employ the separate Rounded monarchy sequence or the September 25 Rounded display convention. The word schematic here identifies the arrangement of the reign ledger, not a silent switch to the Rounded chronology.

Relationship Calculation Meaning
Historical first part 1446 − 966 = 480 Exodus to historical Temple label
Historical second part 966 − 586 = 380 Historical Temple to fall label
Shared whole 1446 − 586 = 860 480 + 380 = 430 + 430
Schematic first part 1446 − 1016 = 430 Exodus to schematic Temple pivot
Schematic second part 1016 − 586 = 430 Schematic Temple pivot to fall label
Temple-coordinate difference 1016 − 966 = 50 Difference between the two arrangements
Normal MT Egyptian sojourn 1876 − 1446 = 430 Jacob’s entry into Egypt to Exodus
Complete three-part structure 1876 − 586 = 1290 3 × 430

The first member of the three-part structure is the normal MT Egypt-only sojourn. The later two use the schematic 1016 BC pivot. The structure should therefore never be described as three independently measured historical intervals of 430 years.

Ezekiel’s 390 + 40 = 430 is a separate prophetic sign total (Ezekiel 4:4–6). It supplies a textual correspondence, not another set of Judah reign entries. Likewise, Leviticus’ 7 × 7 = 49, followed by the fiftieth year (Leviticus 25:8–10), explains the Jubilee comparison without proving deliberate numerical composition of the reign notices.

One further 430 belongs to another pair of events: 966 → 536 BC is the ordinary historical foundation-to-foundation display. File 19 also preserves 967 BC, second month → 537 BC, second month in its adjacent boundary convention. Those endpoints must remain distinct from the schematic Temple-to-destruction span 1016 → 586 BC.
