So Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.
So Enoch lived a total of 365 years.
Mahalalel and Enoch belong to the same family line: Mahalalel is Jared’s father and Enoch’s grandfather. Their two recorded lifespans have a striking sum:
895 + 365 = 1260 years.
A second comparison places Mahalalel’s death at the center of two equal spans in the Rounded chronology:
4106 → 2816 → 1526 BC.
1290 + 1290 = 2580 years.
The first pattern adds two lifespans. The second measures intervals between three chronological coordinates: Creation, Mahalalel’s death, and Moses’ birth. This introduction explains both, with diagrams that keep their different measurements visible. The supporting appendix gives the source tables, ordinary-versus-Rounded comparison, and calculation notes.
1. A grandfather and grandson whose lives overlap
The figures here follow the Masoretic Text (MT), the Hebrew textual tradition represented by these Genesis readings. Mahalalel is 65 when Jared is born, and Jared is 162 when Enoch is born (Genesis 5:15; 5:18, BSB). Enoch therefore enters the family 227 years after Mahalalel’s birth:
65 + 162 = 227.
Enoch’s 365 years then run entirely within his grandfather’s 895-year life. When Enoch is taken by God, Mahalalel has 303 years still to live:
227 + 365 + 303 = 895.
Genesis says that God took Enoch, and Hebrews describes him as taken without experiencing death (Genesis 5:24; Hebrews 11:5, BSB). His 365-year total marks the end of the earthly life recorded in the genealogy; it is not presented as a death notice like Mahalalel’s.
In the project’s normal MT chronology, the selected coordinates are:
| Person | Birth, BC | End of recorded earthly life, BC | Recorded years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mahalalel | 3719 | 2824, death | 895 |
| Enoch | 3492 | 3127, taken by God | 365 |
These BC assignments belong to the chronological reconstruction; Genesis supplies the ages and family relationships. The first diagram shows why the overlapping lives and their combined total answer different questions.

Calculation and model details
The 65 years to Jared’s birth and 162 years from Jared’s birth to Enoch’s birth total 227. Thus 3719 − 3492 = 227, 3492 − 3127 = 365, and 3127 − 2824 = 303. The overlap diagram uses an 895-year scale; the selected-lifespan addition uses a separate 1260-year scale. Enoch’s endpoint is his being taken, not a stated death.

Adding 895 + 365 counts the recorded years of two selected lives, including years during which both were alive. It does not produce a continuous 1260-year interval in ordinary history. Jared stands between them in the genealogy, so this is also a selection of two lives, rather than the complete sequence of consecutive patriarchal lifespans.
2. Creation to Mahalalel’s death: 1290 years
The project’s normal MT Creation reference is 4114 BC. Mahalalel’s death is placed at 2824 BC. Subtracting the later BC coordinate gives:
4114 − 2824 = 1290 years.
The genealogy explains the same total through smaller parts. The fatherhood ages from Adam through Kenan are 130, 105, 90, and 70, giving 395 years to Mahalalel’s birth (Genesis 5:3–12, BSB). Adding Mahalalel’s complete life gives:
130 + 105 + 90 + 70 = 395.
395 + 895 = 1290.
This 1290 relationship survives in the Rounded representation. Its Creation coordinate is 4106 BC, Mahalalel’s birth is 3711 BC, and his death is 2816 BC. The same two parts remain:
4106 − 3711 = 395.
3711 − 2816 = 895.
4106 − 2816 = 1290.
The Rounded model changes the positions of these events, while retaining their intervening 395 and 895 years. Both Mahalalel’s fatherhood age of 65 and his remaining 830 years are already multiples of five, so his represented lifespan remains 895. File 51a §§3.4 and 10.7 supplies the paired coordinates and explicitly records this invariant 1290 span.
3. The Rounded midpoint between Creation and Moses
The symmetry appears when the comparison continues to Moses’ birth at 1526 BC. From Rounded Mahalalel’s death at 2816 BC, the interval is another 1290 years:
2816 − 1526 = 1290.
The complete Rounded line therefore divides into equal halves:
| Rounded interval | Years |
|---|---|
| Creation, 4106 BC → Mahalalel’s death, 2816 BC | 1290 |
| Mahalalel’s death, 2816 BC → Moses’ birth, 1526 BC | 1290 |
| Creation → Moses’ birth | 2580 |

Calculation and model details
4106 − 2816 = 1290; 2816 − 1526 = 1290; 4106 − 1526 = 2580 = 2 × 1290. The two colored spans use an identical scale. Mahalalel’s 2816 BC death is computed from his Rounded birth at 3711 BC and unchanged 895-year lifespan. Scripture links identify the persons and events; they do not supply these BC dates.

Mahalalel’s death is the exact midpoint within this Rounded construction. Each half is also 3 × 430, and the whole is 6 × 430. These are equivalent factorizations of the same intervals. File 51a §4A.9 explicitly lists the two 1290 relationships and the 2580 whole; §7A supplies the Moses comparison.
This distinction matters because the ordinary MT second interval is different:
2824 − 1526 = 1298 years.
Thus the normal MT sequence gives 1290 + 1298, while the Rounded sequence gives 1290 + 1290. The side-by-side diagram and table show the eight-year difference without altering the normal death date.
Here Rounded names a defined model. Its dates are calculated from rounded chronological inputs; 2816 is not obtained by rounding the number 2824 to the nearest five. The source classifies Rounded death dates as a secondary, theoretical layer, derived from the Rounded births and separately rounded fatherhood and remaining-years figures. The midpoint belongs to that layer and preserves its stated status.
4. How the 1260 and 1290 comparisons fit together
The two patterns share Mahalalel, but each uses him differently. The 1260 combines his life with Enoch’s. The 1290 measures from Creation to his death and, in the Rounded model, from that death to Moses’ birth.
| Pattern | People or events connected | Measurement |
|---|---|---|
| 895 + 365 = 1260 | Mahalalel and Enoch | Sum of two selected lifespans |
| 395 + 895 = 1290 | Creation to Mahalalel’s death | Ordinary or Rounded interval under the stated coordinates |
| 1290 + 1290 = 2580 | Creation, Mahalalel’s death, Moses’ birth | Exact midpoint in the Rounded model |
Mahalalel’s 895 years appear in both the 1260 lifespan sum and the first 1290 interval. Enoch’s 365 supplies the other part of the lifespan sum; the earlier 395-year genealogical interval supplies the other part of the 1290. Their difference is 30:
395 − 365 = 30, so 1290 − 1260 = 30.
The totals share Mahalalel’s 895 years; their 30-year difference comes from the other quantities being added, 365 and 395.
5. Genealogy, witness, and appointed time
The numbers also invite a comparison with prophetic texts. Revelation gives the two witnesses a period of 1260 days, while Daniel names 1290 days in relation to the removal of the regular sacrifice and the abomination of desolation (Revelation 11:3; Daniel 12:11, BSB). Those passages count days; the genealogical calculations above count years or sum lifespans.
I read the shared numbers as a possible connection between the genealogy and the prophetic themes of witness and appointed time. Enoch’s walk with God gives that comparison a narrative setting. The identification of Mahalalel and Enoch with Revelation’s two witnesses remains an interpretation: Revelation 11 does not name them as its witnesses, and the numerical sum alone does not establish that identification.
The clearest result can be seen directly in the diagrams. Two overlapping lives supply 1260 recorded years when added. Mahalalel’s death stands 1290 years from the normal Creation reference and retains that interval in the Rounded representation. In the Rounded line, a second 1290 then reaches Moses’ birth.
These relationships give a focused way to examine the genealogy’s numerical form. The appendix keeps the normal dates, the Rounded calculations, and the source distinctions available for closer inspection.
