Technical Appendix: Noah’s Ark and the 600-Year Pattern

This appendix supports Noah’s Ark: Its Dimensions and the 600-Year Pattern. It keeps the calculations, date conventions, and optional comparisons together without requiring them for a first reading of the article.

Go directly to the dimensions, Jacob-to-Conquest span, 120-year comparison, 100 and 60, Noah/Shem dates, or optional +60 Terah comparison.

Conventions

The governing framework is MT Standard-Normal: the Masoretic Text with 430 years in Egypt, Nisan reckoning, no +60 Terah adjustment, and no inserted second Cainan. The appendix opens the Terah alternative only in its final comparison table. No Rounded Chronology operator, Mirror calculation, or cumulative lifespan stacking is used.

BC intervals are calculated by subtracting the later year label from the earlier one. These whole-year comparisons do not assign unrecorded birthdays or make Moses’ death and the Conquest occur on the same day. Both events belong to the 1406 BC endpoint year in the working chronology.

File 18 §§1.4 and 2.1–2.4 supplies the regular tables and their transformations. Its MT Minimum-Regular patriarchal dates are moved 215 years earlier to obtain the normal Egypt-only position. Thus Jacob’s minimum birth label 1791 becomes 2006 BC; Moses’ birth and the Exodus/Conquest anchors remain fixed. This change of table position is not rounding.

Source: Genesis 6:15, BSB. The doubling and the comparison of its numerical results with years belong to the Ark study’s interpretive proposal. They are not a biblical rule converting physical length into elapsed time. The canonical files cited below independently control the chronological inputs and distinctions used to test that proposal.

Sources: File 04 §1.1, File 18 §§1.4 and 2.4, and File 55 §1.2. The 430 years are Israel’s Egyptian sojourn, not 430 years of affliction. For the textual alternatives to the Egypt-only reading, see the sojourn article.

Table C. The final 120 years

ComparisonInitial portionFinal portionStatus
Noah’s age before the Flood600 − 120 = 480120 to the FloodCountdown interpretation of Genesis 6:3
Jacob’s birth to the Conquest2006 − 1526 = 480Moses’ 120-year lifeArithmetic from the regular chronology and stated lifespan

File 23 §5.5 explicitly reads Genesis 6:3 in two directions: 120 years remaining before the Flood, and an anticipation of Moses’ 120-year lifespan. The inferred age 480 follows from 600 − 120; Genesis does not directly state Noah’s age when the warning was given or the duration of Ark construction.

File 23 illustrates the warning in the MT Minimum-Regular position: 2843 → 2363 → 2243 BC. Transferring that illustration into the main article’s normal position adds 215 to all three labels: 3058 → 2578 → 2458 BC. The spans remain 480 + 120 = 600. This normal-position rendering is a derived illustration of the source’s calculation, not a new textual date for the warning.

Table D. The 100 and 60 in the family line

Isaac’s birth → Conquest2066 → 1406660 = 60 + 600Same-side BC subtraction

These are links along the ancestral line followed by an era spanning generations. They are not four consecutive lifespans. Genesis 21:5 and 25:26 supply the fatherhood ages; Files 01 §2.1, 04 §1.1, and 18 §§1.4 and 2.3 control the date labels.

Table E. Keeping the Noah/Shem bindings distinct

Person / local stateStart reference BCDeath / end reference BCLifespan measure
Noah, Gear 230582108950
Noah, Gear 130562106950
Shem, Gear 2: triad / biological reference25581958600
Shem, Gear 1: elected-lineage station25561956600

Sources: File 02 §§6.1–6.2, File 18 §1.3.5, and File 47 §§0.3 and 5.1–5.2. File 47’s September clarification identifies 2556 BC as an elected-lineage station, not a second biological birth. The table preserves each paired 600-year reference without collapsing the two roles.

The normal Flood reference is 2458 BC and Arphaxad remains 2456 BC. Against those fixed references, Noah’s Gear-2 birth gives 3058 − 2458 = 600. Shem’s Gear-2 reference gives 2558 − 2458 = 100, while his elected-lineage station gives 2556 − 2456 = 100 to Arphaxad.

These are the two named bindings retained by File 18. One emphasizes the Noah-bound 500/600 structure; the other follows the age of 100 at Arphaxad’s birth in Genesis 11:10. A calculation that combines them must name that combination. The main article’s 100 + 500 = 600 follows Genesis 11:10–11 without requiring an absolute birth-date choice.

Table F. The optional +60 Terah comparison

Selected Noah rowNormal birth → death BCWith +60 Terah, BCRelation to Abraham’s 2166 BC birth
Gear 23058 → 21083118 → 2168Noah’s death is 2 years earlier
Gear 13056 → 21063116 → 2166Matching year label

Both rows retain 950 years. File 18’s variant rule moves Terah and the earlier ancestral field by 60; Abraham’s birth stays fixed in the same 430-in-Egypt position. Thus the Noah-death/Abraham-birth match requires both the selected Gear-1 Noah row and +60 Terah. It does not belong to the default Gear-2, no-+60 presentation. Sources: File 18 §§1.3.1 and 1.4; File 02 §6.2.

The 60-year age of Isaac at Jacob’s birth provides the main article’s simpler comparison. The Ark’s height does not independently establish which Terah reading should be used.

Reading the sources

The current canonical Markdown index is the controlling source layer. Files 02 and 47 govern Noah/Shem distinctions; Files 04 and 18 supply the ordinary dates; File 23 §1 develops the tebah comparison and §5.5 the Noah/Moses 120-year interpretation. The shared ark/basket theme is a theological reason to compare the narratives, not an arithmetic operation.

The detailed Ark study develops overlapping spans and wider comparisons, with seven supporting tables. Each comparison retains its named dates and conventions. Return to the main article for the illustrated explanation.
