Technical Appendix: Peleg and Babel

This appendix supplies the calculations behind Peleg and Babel: Division, the Nations, and Restoration. The main article can be read on its own; each table below answers a particular question raised there.

A1. How the regular date is obtained

Normal MT here means Nisan reckoning, 430 years in Egypt, no additional Terah +60, and no restored second Cainan. The normal Flood is 2458 BC; Arphaxad is born in 2456 BC, two years later. The next three births follow Genesis 11:12–17.

A1. Birth intervals from Arphaxad to Peleg
Birth interval Father’s age Calculation Son’s birth
Arphaxad → Shelah 35 2456 − 35 2421 BC
Shelah → Eber 30 2421 − 30 2391 BC
Eber → Peleg 34 2391 − 34 2357 BC
Arphaxad → Peleg 99 2456 − 2357 2357 BC

Peleg’s lifespan is 30 + 209 = 239 years (Genesis 11:18–19). Therefore 2357 − 239 = 2118 BC, his death. Flood-to-birth is 2458 − 2357 = 101 years; Arphaxad-to-birth is 99. These are actual, unrounded figures.

File 18 §2.2 prints the minimum-chronology Peleg row as 2142–1903 BC. Restoring the additional 215 years from that table’s minimum sojourn setting to the normal 430-year setting gives 2357–2118 BC. This +215 source-table conversion is not the separate +60 Terah variant.

The article assigns Babel to Peleg’s birth as its chronological marker. Genesis 10:25 places the division within his days, without specifying an age at the beginning or end of tower construction. The birth marker and the narrative’s degree of precision should both remain visible.

A2. The twelve lifespans behind 3496 BC

The cumulative MT line ends at Moses’ death / Conquest in 1406 BC. Place each complete lifespan before that boundary. After Jacob the line follows Levi, Kohath, Amram, and Moses; Joseph and Joshua are not inserted into this twelve-name sum.

A2. Twelve cumulative MT lifespans
Person MT lifespan Cumulative segment, BC
Peleg 239 3496 → 3257
Reu 239 3257 → 3018
Serug 230 3018 → 2788
Nahor 148 2788 → 2640
Terah 205 2640 → 2435
Abraham 175 2435 → 2260
Isaac 180 2260 → 2080
Jacob 147 2080 → 1933
Levi 137 1933 → 1796
Kohath 133 1796 → 1663
Amram 137 1663 → 1526
Moses 120 1526 → 1406
Total 2090 3496 → 1406

The three groups shown in Figure 2 are 856 + 707 + 527 = 2090. Their boundaries are 3496 → 2640 → 1933 → 1406 BC. These groups make the addition readable; they do not introduce a new chronological operator.

For Peleg, distinguish the primary position from the other displays in File 18 §6A:

A2. Peleg’s coordinate and envelope displays
Display Coordinate or span Meaning
Primary Moses/Nisan 3496 BC Beginning of Peleg’s full-lifespan segment
Whole-year Aaron/Moses pair 3499 / 3496 BC Three-year integer branch display
Exact Aaron/Tishri track 3499.5 BC Phase-resolved partner, 3.5 years earlier than 3496
Nisan envelope 3501n–3494n BC Seven-year starting envelope
Parallel Tishri envelope 3502t–3495t BC Autumn counterparts used in the Mirror comparison

Here n means Nisan/spring and t means Tishri/autumn. The seven-year envelope is part of the coordinated cumulative architecture, not permission to choose unrelated adjustments for each person. Its primary position, 3496, is not the arithmetic midpoint of 3501 and 3494. Peleg’s lifespan remains 239 throughout; 3499.5 is a coordinate, not a lifespan of 239.5 years.

For the underlying Aaron–Moses and seven-year construction, see the cumulative chronology appendix and File 18 §6A.

A3. The Peleg–Conquest Mirror, component by component

This comparison uses the actual cumulative MT envelopes and the phase-resolved paired Mirror. It does not use Rounded mod-5 display or digit reversal.

File 18’s Peleg clarification supplies the full pairing. The Conquest-to-rest interval is 1406n–1399n BC, with the parallel autumn interval 1407t–1400t BC. In File 09’s paired Mirror, the autumn/spring boundaries transform as follows:

A3. The Conquest and rest boundary pairs
Original BC boundary pair Reflected AD pair
Conquest: 1407t / 1406n BC AD 1406t / 1407n
Land-rest boundary: 1400t / 1399n BC AD 1399t / 1400n

Thus the reflected period reads AD 1399t/1400n → AD 1406t/1407n. Reflection reverses the order of the source boundaries: the land-rest boundary appears first on the AD side. The article’s diagram extracts the Nisan components, AD 1400–1407.

The four checks pair the same season at each end:

A3. Four civil-span component checks
Peleg boundary, BC Reflected Conquest/rest boundary, AD Civil calculation Years
3501n 1400n 3501 + 1400 − 1 4900
3494n 1407n 3494 + 1407 − 1 4900
3502t 1399t 3502 + 1399 − 1 4900
3495t 1406t 3495 + 1406 − 1 4900

The last row is the particular comparison printed in File 22 §1.4. File 18’s later clarification identifies 3495t as the terminal member of the Tishri envelope. All four rows, including that member, are preserved here.

Same-side BC intervals use subtraction. A civil BC-to-AD interval uses BC + AD − 1, because there is no year zero. In these rows the matched seasonal phases introduce no further half-year difference. A single unsuffixed year reflected on its own is a different state from the paired seasonal construction; it must not replace one component of the table.

The numerical readings are 4900 = 70 × 70 = 100 × 49. The 70 is the conventional MT Table-of-Nations count; the 49-year measure follows the seven sevens in Leviticus 25:8. The calculation and its interpretation as dispersion/restoration are distinct parts of the argument. The AD endpoints are reflected coordinates, not dates assigned to future events.

A4. Why the three cumulative Peleg positions differ

File 18 §§6A, 6C, and 6D controls the cumulative positions. The following table compares full lifespans from Peleg through Moses. All twelve names are included in A2; only the differing rows need to be repeated here.

A4. Lifespan differences among MT, SP, and LXX
Lifespan or total MT SP LXX
Peleg 239 239 339
Reu 239 239 339
Serug 230 230 330
Nahor 148 148 208
Terah 205 145 205
Abraham through Moses, seven lifespans 1029 1029 1029
Peleg through Moses, total 2090 2030 2450
Add the 1406 BC Moses/Conquest boundary 3496 BC 3436 BC 3856 BC

The SP table continues through Joshua’s 110-year segment, 1406–1296 BC, and is anchored at his death in 1296 BC. Reading back from the intermediate Moses/Conquest boundary at 1406 gives the same Peleg position: 1296 + 110 + 2030 = 3436. The comparison does not silently replace the SP table’s terminal event.

The LXX column uses its own 339/339/330 lifespans for Peleg/Reu/Serug, not the MT’s 239/239/230. The native LXX second Cainan lies earlier in the ancestry and is not one of these twelve Peleg-to-Moses segments. The ordinary MT comparison does not restore him.

A4. Differences between cumulative Peleg positions
Difference between primary positions Calculation Reason in this segment
LXX earlier than MT 3856 − 3496 = 360 Three additional 100s, plus Nahor’s additional 60
MT earlier than SP 3496 − 3436 = 60 Terah’s 205 rather than 145
LXX earlier than SP 3856 − 3436 = 420 The combined 360 and 60

These are differences between accumulated textual lifespans. They do not apply the optional regular Terah +60 transformation.

The two comparisons retained in the main article are:

A4. The retained Jubilee comparisons
Starting position Target Calculation Jubilee measure
LXX cumulative Peleg, 3856 BC Conquest, 1406 BC 3856 − 1406 = 2450 50 × 49
BJ Creation, 3856 BC Conquest, 1406 BC 3856 − 1406 = 2450 50 × 49
SP cumulative Peleg, 3436 BC Birth-of-Christ anchor, 6 BC 3436 − 6 = 3430 70 × 49

The first two rows share a numerical starting label but describe different subjects. The BJ Creation-to-Conquest comparison is controlled by File 20 §7A.8 and File 53’s companion-trunk routing. It must not be conflated with the BJ Fall-to-rest interval 3849–1399 BC, which is a distinct 2450-year relationship. Figure 4 displays only the Creation-to-Conquest comparison.

A5. Jubilees as a separate witness

The Book of Jubilees (BJ) supplies a related account, not the controlling date for the article’s biblical Babel marker.

A5. Genesis and Jubilees: separate narrative roles
Passage What the account contributes How it is used here
Genesis 10:25; 11:1–9 Division in Peleg’s days; Babel’s languages and dispersion Peleg’s birth is the adopted chronological marker
Jubilees 8:8–11 Land division begins around Peleg’s birth; Noah subsequently allocates the earth A distinct ancient interpretation of division and inheritance
Jubilees 10:18–27 Babel’s construction, confusion, and dispersion; 43 years of building A separate narrative sequence, not an imported MT date

The Jubilees passages were checked in R. H. Charles’s 1913 translation: chapter 8 and chapter 10. Their wording is paraphrased here. The chronological annotations supplied with that edition are not quoted as words of the ancient text.

Within the repository’s BJ conversion, Creation is 3856 BC = AM 1. AM means Anno Mundi, a year numbered from Creation. An ordinal AM label and elapsed years are different: AM 1569 means 1568 elapsed years from the beginning of AM 1. File 20’s conversion is BC = 3856 − (AM − 1). This convention is given for reading the BJ sources, not to recalculate the normal MT Babel marker.

The biblical marker throughout the article remains Peleg’s birth in 2357 BC.
