Chapter 17 Greek word inventory

The Gospel of John contains 26 tokens of the lemma ὥρα in 24 verses in the named text used here: the SBL Greek New Testament with MorphGNT 6.12 analysis. John 4:52 and 12:27 contain two tokens each. This is a lexical inventory including ordinary time notices, daylight hours, a limited season and childbirth, as well as Jesus' hour of glorification. It is not a count of 26 explicit Passion predictions.

The supplied count scanned all 21 chapters of John, 15,438 token rows, and selected every row whose NFC-normalized lemma column equals ὥρα. All inflections and singular/plural forms were included. The Johannine letters and Revelation were excluded. The retained extract below contains only matching word rows, not the entire Gospel.

During preparation of this supplement, the retained rows were recounted and checked against their verse and wordform totals. The full Greek source was not downloaded or rescanned anew. The supplied count records a full-source scan; the reproducible script allows readers to repeat it using the pinned complete source.

Source line refers to the pinned MorphGNT John file. All 26 rows have part of speech N- and lemma ὥρα. The TSV includes these fields explicitly. Normalized forms total: ὥρα 18; ὥραν 4; ὥρᾳ 1; ὧραι 1; ὥρας 2.

Verse inventory and English comparison

The supplied publisher Berean Standard Bible count finds 21 English surface tokens “hour” or “hours” in 19 verses. Four Greek occurrences are rendered “time” and one “season”; these are included in the Greek total. English word counts and Greek lemma counts therefore answer different questions. Context descriptions below are explanatory summaries added to the inventory.

The English result uses the publisher's complete plain-text download. Selected eBible clauses were compared in the supplied research; a complete byte-level eBible distribution count was not performed. No fresh English download or count was performed for this supplement.

The Greek source hash is checked before counting; no full Bible texts are written by the script.

The script's output location was adapted for this standalone supplement. The supplied selection rule and count calculation were retained. A changed English publisher text requires inspection rather than assuming the old surface count still applies.
